Colbie Caillat got to thinking about “Christmas in the Sand,” the fun-loving title track off her upcoming holiday album, while relaxing on a Hawaiian beach with friends this past spring.
“I was thinking, what do they listen to over here at Christmas time? I bet they don’t always want to hear songs about white Christmases and bundling up ’cause it’s cold outside,” she tells Billboard, which has the exclusive streaming premiere. “They want to have a holiday song they can relate to.”
Caillat, who releases the “Sand” album on Oct. 23, teamed up with writing partners Kara DioGuardi and Jason Reeves to craft the bubbly and admittedly silly track.
“Kara started coming up with all these funny lyrics about Santa falling off his surf board and Rudolf playing reindeer games on me,” she says. “It’s such a fun song and really shows a silly side of my personality that most people don’t see besides my friends and family.”
More Holiday Albums: Rod Stewart, Cee Lo, Lady A, John Travolta
The album, produced by her dad Ken, includes five originals and 10 holiday standards, as well as guest appearances by Brad Paisley on a rocking “Merry Christmas Baby” and Gavin DeGraw, who ad libs his way through what Caillat calls a “hilarious” version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Caillat, Reeves and DioGuardi also co-wrote the track “Everyday Is Christmas.”
To promote the album, Caillat has scheduled a week of holiday shows at the end of November and beginning of December, plus a series of TV appearances.
