Alice Russell, “Heartbreaker (FaltyDL Remix)” (Tru Thoughts / Differ-Ant)
It takes a good minute for FaltyDL to warm it up on his remix of Alice Russell’s “Heartbreaker.” There are pianos to hyperedit. But by the time the funky bossa house beats kick in, the Aussie songstress’ jam is sizzling. With its hip-shake-ready percussive elements and the late-arrival tempo shift woven masterfully around loops of Russell’s sweltering vocals, this is a heat you want pouring over you at a pool party or in a sweaty club. Falty and Alice are giving you straight house, but there are just enough surprises to keep your attention too. -Zel
Ivan Gough vs. Steve Bleas & Stevie Mink, “Boom” (Size)
Size Records has been on a streak with big releases lately, and the aptly-titled “Boom” continues this trend. Ivan Gough (famous for the sing-along anthem “In My Mind”) teams up with Steve Bleas and Stevie Mink for a song that can only be described as massive. Electro synths and staccato percussion elements make this a rage-worthy banger, one peppered with perfectly timed grunts that are as random as they are fitting. “Boom” showed up in numerous sets at this year’s Ultra Music Festival, but now that it’s officially available for download, expect to start hearing it even more. -Jacob
TNGHT, “Acrylics” (LuckyMe x Warp Records)
It’s dark. It’s weird. It’s complex as hell. And I wouldn’t expect anything less from TNGHT. “Acrylics” is the latest speaker-blowing single from Lunice and Hudson Mohawke, out this week. These two take trap to a higher ground (pun intended). Their mastery of samples and ability to throw some actual melodies into the melee sets their music apart time and time again. I love the creepy-cool, childlike musicbox sounds at the intro and breakdown of the track, especially when TNGHT starts bringing in double-time synths, ominous as anything, and—finally—drops the headbanging bass. There’s a lot going on in “Acrylics,” but just as with any TNGHT track, the boys make it work. -Lauren
