Fans of former President Bill Clinton note: there’ll a new compilation of his favorite recordings available next month. An 11 track CD called “The Bill Clinton Collection: Selections from The Clinton Music Room,” is scheduled to be the first in a series.
Volume one favors the jazz classics and includes songs such as John Coltrane’s version of “My One and Only Love,”” Miles Davis’s take on “My Funny Valentine,” David Sanborn’s rendering of “Harlem Nocturne,” and Zoot Sims’s reading of “Summertime.” Piano giant Art Tatum also makes the list with a version of “There Will Never Be Another You,” and Russian tenor sax giant Igor Butman’s “Nostalgie” will also be included.
Clinton picked several inspirational tracks: Mahalia Jackson’s version of “Precious Lord” and Nina Simone’s stately take on “I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel to be Free).” Evangelical singer Mickey Mangum, a longtime Clinton friend, will also be included, offering his version of “In the Presence of Jehovah.”
Irish singer-songwriter Phil Coulter’s “The Town I Love So Well” and Judy Collins’s version of “Chelsea Morning” round out the list.
Will there be any party music on future compilations?
“President Clinton hasn’t picked the songs yet for the subsequent albums,” says Clinton Foundation president Skip Rutherford, “but in all likelihood there will be [some r&b and rock included] because he likes a wide variety of music.”
