It’s pretty rare for someone to arrive on American Idol with a fully formed backstory that almost every viewer already knows. But then again, most aspiring Idols aren’t the offspring of a former presidential senior spokesperson.
And so on Sunday night (March 21), several weeks after her controversial first performance on the show, internet famous singer Claudia Conway — daughter of former Trump aide Kellyanne Conway — was back in front of the mic.
With a new raven-haired look and seemingly pumped-up confidence courtesy of kind words from judge Katy Perry, the giggly 16-year-old known for trolling her mother on social media made a bid to get through to the next Hollywood round with a breathy cover of Bishop Briggs’ “River.” While Perry’s reaction shot found her looking on stone-faced, fellow judge Luke Bryan was shown slightly bobbing his head as the camera cut to stage mom Kellyanne giving her girl a standing ovation.
“I’ve never performed on a stage that big,” a relieved-sounding Claudia said afterward. ‘That was crazy.”
Though the competition in the pop category appeared to be formidable and Conway’s vocals were not particularly impressive, she was waved on to the delight of her mom, who totally mommed the moment by joking, “She thinks I can’t sing” and then breaking into a bit of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire.” MOM!
