Support for the rights of creators will be the underlying theme of the 44th World Congress of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), to be held Oct. 18-21 in Seoul, South Korea. An as-yet-unnamed senior representative of the World Intellectual Property Organization will deliver the keynote address to open the conference.
The biennial event — last held in London — is the most high-profile forum for the world’s copyright organizations, representing music, literary, audiovisual, dramatic, artistic and film creators. The confab is returning to Asia for the first time in 20 years at the invitation of South Korean authors’ society KOMCA.
In keeping with tradition, CISAC Gold Medals will be awarded during the congress to prominent creators or to those who have exceptionally served the cause of copyright protection or administration. Creators from the host nation and neighboring countries will be specifically recognized this year.
Formed in 1926 in France, CISAC remains based in Paris. From an initial 18 founding members, the organization today counts 209 member bodies from 108 countries, representing more than 2 million creators.
