Christina Perri and Paul Costabile caught up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala on Friday (Feb. 8), where they discussed how parenthood has changed Perri’s approach to music and why they consider Dolly Parton to be such an inspiration.
Perri and Costabile, who reveal that this is their first interview together as husband and wife, open up about being parents and how having a baby has changed the way Perri creates her music. “It’s really, really changed everything,” she says.
Perri adds that she now cares more about what her baby Carmella thinks of her music than what anyone else does. “I was writing music all week, and I’m just writing for her,” she says. “It’s just a whole new thing. I want to be an example to her. I put out a lullaby record for her, and so everything that comes next, I feel like will go through this filter of, ‘What will Carmella think?’ So I think it’s changed everything.”
Perri also chats about being influenced by the evening’s honoree Dolly Parton, telling Briggs, “I feel like, specifically, as a woman, and as a female recording artist, there’s no one braver, funnier, or more herself than Dolly Parton. She’s just this legend that we’ve gotten to watch and learn from.”
