Former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson has confirmed his first solo tour backed by a full band, due to kick off Nov. 21 in Dallas. Robinson will be backed by multi-instrumentalist brothers Paul and Jeremy Stacey, who both played on his Redline solo debut, “New Earth Mud.” The set was released yesterday (Oct. 22) and bundled with a DVD chronicling the making of the album.
Robinson previously toured North America acoustically backed only by Paul Stacey. The artist tells Billboard.com he is excited about the prospect of hitting the road without the usual fanfare that accompanied Black Crowes tours. “If I wrote 15 new songs and wanted to go play them, we could book dates and just go play to the people who want to see it,” he says. “It’s great to do things because they’re special to me, not because they’re a commodity for someone else.”
Robinson’s trademark soul-dipped vocals power “New Earth Mud,” which largely eschews the Crowes’ more hard-rock leanings in favor of slow-building ballads (“Untangle My Mind,” “She’s on Her Way”), unabashed love songs (“Katie Dear,” written for his wife, actress Kate Hudson), and happy-go-lucky funk (“Ride”). First single “Safe in the Arms of Love” is getting airplay on a host of U.S. radio outlets.
