Back at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, Chinese superstar Jane Zhang was the first Chinese female artist to attend, with her English hit “Dust My Shoulders Off,” produced by Timbaland. And after two years, she has finally released her first English album, Past Progressive, on April 27 under her own label.
Zhang said creating these songs in English was a challenge that took her out of her comfort zone and a chance to grow. After several explorations and attempts, she finally had the opportunity to combine 16 English songs from the past six years into a full-length English album.
The album’s title, Past Progressive, is neither the title nor the lyrics from any song, but rather refers to a term in English grammar.
Zhang told Billboard Radio China in an email interview that the process of making the new album was also the process of constantly learning new things: “That is like having two selves: one is me in the real arena, while the other tries all new things without borders, and switches at different times.”
“Compared to repeating the same work, the process of making this album makes every day more fulfilling, giving myself more enthusiasm, motivation and goals for music. The 16 songs you hear are about my work and life. It was my biography of music, and is Past Progressive.”
