Childish Gambino dropped new music on Saturday Night Live last night (May 5), and he turned one of his performances into a party for the occasion.
For the musical side of his SNL hosting/musical guest duties, Gambino premiered two new songs, his first since the 2016 release of Awaken, My Love! For “Saturday,” Gambino unbuttoned his shirt and the formality by turning the Studio 8H stage into a proper hang, with friends — including Zoë Kravitz — playing cards and drinking out of solo cups while he let his falsetto fly as sang in the center of the action.
For “This Is America,” the tone turned somber and contemplative, and the warmth of “Saturday” was cast in darker violets and blues to reflect the weight of the track. (Gambino put out the “This Is America” video in the middle of the SNL broadcast and worked some of its choreography into his performance.)
