Japanese jazz pianist Chihiro Yamanaka is set to release her first new studio album in a year on June 19.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of Blue Note, Yamanaka’s highly anticipated new set pays tribute to some iconic jazz numbers by Sonny Clark and more.
The album will also focus on the works of Michel Petrucciani, the French pianist who overcame a genetic disease to become one of the most accomplished jazz musicians of his generation. This year marks the 20th anniversary of his death at age 36.
Yamanaka recorded with her New York Trio regulars, bassist Yoshi Waki and drummer John Davis, and Robert Glasper Trio mainstays, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid. The two separate rhythm sections enabled her to explore the wide variety of expressions captured on the 10-track set.
Entitled Prima Del Tramonto, the album will also contain original compositions by Yamanaka, including the title track featured as the closing number.
