The Chicago Cubs have broken one of the greatest droughts in world sport.
Cubs players and their long-suffering fans are celebrating after the franchise won its first World Series championship since 1908, defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in a nailbiting game 7 delayed by rain.
The historic victory was completed when Ben Zobrist hit a go-ahead double in the 10th innings.
Cleveland’s misery continues for another year at the very least. The season’s runner-up had been trying to claim its first title since 1948, but dropped the last two games at home.
President Obama, Pearl Jam, Bettle Midler, Major Lazer, Common and Buddy Guy led tributes to the new World Champions.
