The Billboard Hot 100:
— Adele: “Rolling in the Deep” claims a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending a second week atop Hot 100 Airplay (150 million in audience, up 5%, according to Nielsen BDS). The multi-format hit rewrites the weekly plays record (5,069) on Adult Top 40, where it reigns for a fifth week, tops Mainstream Top 40 for a second week and bullets at No. 3 on Adult Contemporary and No. 18 on Rock Songs. “Deep” additionally continues making inroads at urban radio, rising 100-82 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. On Hot Digital Songs, “Deep” logs a fifth frame at No. 1 (244,000 downloads sold, down 4%, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
— Lady Gaga: “The Edge of Glory” advances 8-7 on the Hot 100, spurred by a 24-15 rise on Hot 100 Airplay (51 million, up 31%). “Glory” bounds 14-10 on Mainstream Top 40 in its fourth week, marking her second-fastest top 10 ascension on the radio airplay ranking. Only the title cut from her new album “Born This Way” soared into the bracket more quickly (two weeks). The song’s airplay vault helps reaffirm her star status at pop radio following the No. 15 Mainstream Top 40 peak for previous single “Judas,” after seven of her first eight chart entries had reached No. 1.
— Lil Wayne: “How to Love” blasts 69-12 with the Hot 100’s Greatest Gainer/Digital award in its second week. The song, which showcases the rapper’s singing skills, rockets 52-5 on Hot Digital Songs (151,000, up 309%) following its first full week of retail availability.
— Coldplay: “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” opens as the Hot 100’s Hot Shot Debut at No. 29. After less than a week at retail and radio (it was released June 3), the track starts on Hot Digital Songs at No. 17 (85,000). It begins with 10 million audience impressions on 122 stations and bows on the Rock Songs (No. 21), Triple A (No. 23) and Alternative (No. 28) airplay charts. “Waterfall,” released ahead of Coldplay’s forthcoming fifth studio album (with Capitol yet to confirm its inclusion on the set), marks the band’s sixth top 40 Hot 100 hit. Its highest-peaking chart entry, “Viva La Vida,” began a three-week reign at No. 1 this week in 2008.
— Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina: Following their post-“American Idol” finale first-week fanfare, this year’s winner and runner-up fall 11-35 and 20-60 on the Hot 100 with “I Love You This Big” and “Like My Mother Does,” respectively. The songs dip by 53% and 60% to 80,000 and 49,000 downloads sold, respectively. Early radio support is encouraging, however, as “Big” bounds 32-28 and “Like” lifts 49-43 on Hot Country Songs, making Mercury Nashville’s decision to sign the singers look all the smarter.
— Katy Perry: The quest is on for a fifth Hot 100 No. 1 from “Teenage Dream,” as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” returns at No. 63. The song had spent a week at No. 67 the week that its parent album launched atop the Billboard 200 (Sept. 11, 2010). An online teaser for the cut’s video, due June 14, helped prompt a 131% digital sales spike to 31,000. “Friday” concurrently debuts on Mainstream Top 40 (where Perry is also seeking a fifth No. 1 from her current album) at No. 31.
— Beyonce: Columbia Records’ radio focus shifts to “Best Thing I Never Had,” new on the Hot 100 at No. 84. The song joins two other titles on the chart from her forthcoming album “4”: “Run the World (Girls)” (29-55) and “1+1” (57-89). The latter two songs had peaked last week following Beyonce’s exposure on the 2011 Billboard Music Awards (May 22) and “American Idol” (May 25).
The Billboard 200:
— Lady Gaga: While her “Born This Way” remains at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 174,000, it does so with a massive 84% drop in sales. Next week, Gaga will likely step aside after two weeks in the penthouse, as Adele’s “21” is aiming to return to No. 1.
— As for some interesting moves and debuts outside the top 10 this week:
— Miguel: The R&B singer’s “All I Want Is You” earns Greatest Gainer honors (moving 53-39 with 10,000 sold — an increase of a little over 1,000) as the set’s current single, “Sure Thing,” skips 21-18 on Rhythmic and holds at No. 2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Singles. The album also moves 10-9 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
— Maroon5, Kesha & Michael Jackson: The former’s “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” (a re-entry at No. 102) is among AmazonMP3’s collection of titles priced at $5 throughout the month of June. It’s up by 230% in overall sales. Kesha’s “I Am the Dance Commander + I Command You To Dance” also re-enters (No. 143) following iTunes’ offering of it as part of its “$7.99 Great Albums of 2011″ campaign. Meanwhile, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (a re-entry at No. 187) is included in iTunes’ Black Music Month promotion and it scores a 60% gain.
— needtobreathe: The band’s “The Outsiders” sports a giant 357% sales increase (a re-entry at No. 163) thanks, perhaps, to a little help from Taylor Swift. The band is supporting Swift on her just-launched North American Speak Now tour, which started May 27 in Omaha, Neb. Their trek with Swift continues through October.
— Matthew Morrison: The “Glee” star’s self-titled album takes the second-largest positional fall on the chart this week, dropping 97 rungs to No. 182 (3,000; down 43%) in its fourth week on the list. His tour with NKOTBSB (New Kids on the Block & Backstreet Boys) begins on July 6 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
