This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the soundtrack to Disney’s “Frozen” iced Beyonce out of the No. 1 slot. The movie’s companion album hopped from No. 4 to No. 1, selling 165,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Beyonce’s self-titled album, which spent its first three chart weeks at No. 1, slid to No. 2 with 130,000.
As usual, there were a number of movers and shakers outside of the top two positions on the chart this week. Let’s take a look at some of them…
— Katy Perry, “PRISM” (No. 4): The pop star celebrates her third million-selling album this week with “PRISM.” The set, her latest studio effort for Capitol, sold 51,000 copies this week, upping its cumulative tally to 1,020,000 in 11 weeks of release. Her last album, 2010’s “Teenage Dream,” reached 1 million in 20 weeks.
— OneRepublic, “Native” (No. 8): The group’s album — red-hot with its single “Counting Stars” (No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week) — returns to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 (down a scant 3%) for the first time since its debut frame 40 weeks ago (April 13, 2013).
— Avicii, “True” (No. 22): Seventeen albums leap by at least 50 positions on the chart, including Avicii’s “True,” which vaults 61 slots (up 22% to 13,000). It’s one of only three titles in the top 25 with an increase in sales this week, a remarkable move given that the album market was down by 43%.
— Jim Brickman, “The Magic of Christmas” (No. 58): While it’s the highest debut this week (6,000; up 38%), it’s not new to market; it was released in October. The holiday effort appears on the list, with a gain, thanks to deep discounting at Target stores. It’s the only brick-and-mortar retailer to carry the CD.
— Soundtrack, “American Hustle” (No. 73): A number of films currently in theaters see their corresponding soundtracks scale the chart this week, including “American Hustle,” whose companion set soars 188-73 with 5,000 (up 5%). Also climbing: “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (123-30; up 37%) and “Inside Llewyn Davis” (48-23; up 22%).
— CHVRCHES, “Bones of What You Believe” (No. 98): Youthful-appealing acts make headway on the chart every January, after the Christmas shopping season. In theory, kids with newly-acquired gift cards do some music buying after the holidays, so we see hip acts like CHVRCHES, Haim’s “Days Are Gone” (103-42; down a moderate 7%) and Jhene Aiko’s “Sail Out” (146-49; up 4%) climb.
