The Billboard 200:
On the chart this week, Taylor Swift’s “Red” reigned for a third straight week at No. 1, selling another 196,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The new “Now 44” compilation arrived in the No. 2 slot, moving 99,000 and Ne-Yo’s “R.E.D.” bows at No. 4 with 66,000.
As always, there was other news on the charts this week. Let’s take a look at some of the other movers and shakers on the Billboard 200.
— “Punk Goes Pop”: The fifth volume in the covers series debuts at No. 16 with 21,000 sold — the highest charting “Punk Goes Pop” set since 2009’s second volume (No. 15). Among the covers on the new album are Mayday Parade’s take on Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which was also the album’s best-selling song of the week. The tune moved 15,000 downloads last week and debuts at No. 13 on Alternative Digital Songs.
— “Glee” & “Grease”: “Glee’s” Nov. 15 tribute to the musical “Grease” comes with its own accompanying album (cutely titled “Glee: The Music Presents Glease”), which debuts at No. 28 with 16,000 sold. The set will likely take a jump up the chart next week, after impact from the series’ episode is felt. Meanwhile, on the Top Soundtracks chart, “Glease” is the word at No. 1, where it debuts, while the original “Grease” movie soundtrack jumps 23-15 with a 116% sales gain (2,000 sold).
— Lianne La Havas: Thanks to some major press and promotion, British singer Lianne La Havas has a banner week on the Billboard charts. Her album “Is Your Love Big Enough?” comes roaring back to the Billboard 200, re-entering at No. 160 with a 978% sales gain. It also returns to Rock Albums at No. 40 and Folks Albums at No. 8. The album sold just over 3,000 copies last week — its best sales week yet — following a performance on CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman” (Nov. 8) and a feature on NPR’s “Morning Edition” (No. 5).
— Celtic Woman: The vocal ensemble’s second Christmas album, “Home for Christmas,” vaults from No. 144 to No. 51 with a 130% gain, selling 7,000 for the week. The set jumps up the list thanks to a sale price and promotion in Target’s circular advertisement last week, premium positioning at Walmart stores and the general overall lift for all holiday albums this week. The album should rise again next week, as the group performed as themselves on the Nov. 12 and 13 episodes of CBS’ daytime drama “The Bold and the Beautiful.”
— Crystal Castles: The electronic act’s newest self-titled album debuts at No. 1 on Heatseekers Albums with its best sales week yet, shifting just over 3,000 copies. Its previous two self-titled albums hit Nos. 13 and 3 in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Over on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, the new set arrives at No. 5 — again, the duo’s best rank on that tally, too. (Its two early albums both hit No. 6.)
