SO YOU THINK YOU CAN TOP THE DANCE CHART?
Hi Fred,
In your column last week you mentioned that on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart, Madonna has the most No. 1s, followed by Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Since all of these artists are mainstream artists whose remixes top the charts, my question is, who has the most No. 1s on the dance club chart who is a bona-fide dance artist? Amber? Kristine W? Deborah Cox?
And it seems to me females have the most chart toppers on the list, so who is the male with the most club toppers?

Using your criterion, Kristine W would get the nod for the dance club artist with the most No. 1s. She has a perfect record on the Hot Dance Club Play tally: nine No. 1s out of nine chart entries. Deborah Cox is close behind, with eight No. 1s.
The male act with the most No. 1s on this chart is Pet Shop Boys, with eight. If you’re only counting solo male artists, then Michael Jackson and Prince are tied with seven each. COUNTRY COMFORT

I am a longtime reader of your column and I was wondering if you could shed some light on something. I have noticed that for the past few months that country singles are having a hard time reaching the top 40 portion of the Hot 100.
It seemed to be a given that at least three country singles would be in the top 40 week after week. This week only one country single has broken into the top 40 (Joe Nichols). Has there been some kind of methodology change in the charts recently that I am not aware of or is country radio on the decline? Or are country singles just not selling like they used to? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

The methodology for the Hot 100 did change in February when sales of digital downloads were included for the first time. With sales becoming a bigger factor in determining position on the Hot 100, country songs were affected because many country songs do not have a sales component.
On the Hot Digital Songs chart for the week ending Dec. 3, there are only 14 country songs on the 75-position chart, and none higher than Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” at No. 29 (and two are older Johnny Cash songs). ‘GO’ – ALL THE WAY?

George Strait continues to make chart history and his latest is looking to be no exception as “She Let Herself Go” is getting closer to becoming his 72nd top 10 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, which would put him in fourth place among acts with the most top 10 country hits. All he needs to do is take “Go” to the top of the country chart to tie with the late Conway Twitty for the most No. 1 country songs and he’s got it made.

Hi Fred,
The success of Madonna’s “Hung Up” (which samples ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”) has likely helped ABBA to achieve a chart milestone on the U.K. album chart this week. “ABBA Gold” re-enters the U.K. top 75 at No. 65,
becoming only the sixth album in history to accumulate 350 weeks on the charts.
Since debuting at No. 1 on Oct. 3, 1992, the perennial album has spent at least a week at every position on the chart except No. 42 and No. 50. This got me wondering, would any of your readers (with too much time on their hands) know of any album in history that has held down every position on The Billboard 200?
