Usually, wearing the band’s t-shirt to the gig is a fashion faux pas, but Charlie Puth turned that rule on its head for his performance at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Thankfully, he’s feeling more “unapologetically himself” than ever before, a point he reiterated in a brief video clip before he took the stage. So let the rules be broken — especially if it involves nailing a major performance of “How Long” in an “OH CHARLIE” crewneck.
After a brief intro from Halsey and G-Eazy, Puth, one of iHeartRadio’s nominees for Male Artist of the Year, worked the catwalk at the Forum and literally reached out and touched his fans as he hit every high note on the funk-inflected single. Backlit by tubes of neon and a wash of blue, the nocturnal vibe of the first track from his forthcoming album, Voicenotes, went over brilliantly with the screaming crowd.
Puth’s Voicenotes Tour — which will bring Hailee Steinfeld along for the North American ride — opens in Toronto on July 11.
