Fun fact: Charli XCX helped write Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello‘s steamy smash hit, “Señorita.”
The British songstress dropped by 103.3 AMP Radio in Boston on Monday (Oct. 21), where she revealed that the tune started out as a concept for her own album, the recently-released Charli. “I knew immediately the song wasn’t for me, but that it was good,” she explained.
“This Latin Pop flare just wasn’t right for who I am because I am not a part of that culture, I’m not from there,” she continued. “Whereas Camilla has that in her blood, so when we wrote the song we thought about her and sent it to her.”
The song, more than a year in the making, began in LA working with Andrew Watt, Ali Tamposi and Jack from Clean Bandit. Charli and Cabello discussed the song while opening for Taylor Swift‘s reputation tour. “We were on tour with Taylor together at the time so we were talking about it a little bit,” she continued. “She wanted to do it with Shawn and they were talking about it, like it was just everyone having a long conversation about it. Obviously both of them write as well so they kind of wanted to write on the song and make it more their own.”
“Señorita” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, before climbing to the top spot on Aug. 26.
