In the last four years, Charles Jenkins has racked up two No. 1 albums (The Best of Both Worlds, Any Given Sunday), two top five singles (“Awesome,” “#War”) and a current top 20 on Hot Gospel Songs with “Just to Know Him” featuring Byron Cage. The singer-songwriter just released the video for his new single at radio, “Winning.”
Produced by Grammy winner Warryn Campbell, “Winning” is the lead track from Jenkins’ upcoming third album, Think About These Things. Integrating R&B, hip-hop, pop and dance, the head-bopping, motivational anthem — which just went to radio — introduces a new sound for Jenkins. It’s one the nine-time Stellar Award winner dubs “positive air.”
As Jenkins explains, “Sonically, you’ll hear R&B, hip-hop and other influences on ‘Winning’ and the rest of the album. But positive air is something everyone needs to inhale. It’s a universal Calgon moment. People always keep trying to put music in a genre box. We’re breaking out of that with this record.”
Jenkins, whose music has been licensed by CNN, NBC, BET and others, will release Think About These Things on Sept. 2 through his Empire-distributed label, Inspired People. In the works: a Winning fall tour and an album release concert on Sept. 9 in Chicago, where Jenkins is pastor of Fellowship Chicago. He is presently traveling across the U.S. on McDonald’s Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour, which wraps on Oct. 15 in Los Angeles.
