Chantel Jeffries didn’t intend on becoming a club-hopping DJ. But the 26-year-old model-turned-music-maker is taking full advantage of her opportunities, and in turn, she’s churning out some dance-floor-ready beats.
In a behind-the-scenes look at Jeffries’ life as a DJ, premiering on Billboard below, the Instagram star explains that she essentially fell into the DJ world accidentally. After garnering some attention with her personal SoundCloud playlists, she started getting offers for club appearances.
“I said, ‘Yes, I’ll DJ,’ and I didn’t know how to DJ,” she recalls with a smile. “I just was like, ‘You know, I’m going to do this. Throw me in, sink or swim, I’m just going to see what happens.’ From there, it went well, and I just kept going.”
She also details how she learned to produce her own songs, as well as how her latest single “Facts” came to be — which was another sort of happenstance situation. “We were talking about something in the studio, and [someone was like], ‘That’s a fact,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s a fat fact!’ And I was like, ‘That’s the song. There it is, voila.'”
Jeffries managed to get her “Facts” collaborator YG on FaceTime within 30 minutes of coming up with the concept, and the behind-the-scenes video shows clips of YG and Jeffries working on the song together in the studio. She keeps up with the rapper as they create, even throwing out a line about a Kit-Kat bar that he quickly approved. (The song also features Rich the Kid and BIA.)
Judging by how “Facts” came to life, it seems maybe Chantel Jeffries’ DJ career is more serendipitous than it is fluky.
