The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) unveils the nominees for its 2020 A2IM Libera Awards which, for the first time, will take the form of a virtual ceremony.
Chance the Rapper, FKA Twigs, Mavis Staples, Amyl and The Sniffers, Thom Yorke and Tycho are among the shortlisted artists for this year’s show, which coincides with A2IM’s 15th anniversary.
The coveted album of the year category will be contested by FKA Twigs, Angel Olsen, Brittany Howard, Orville Peck and Big Thief, while best live act will be a dust-up between Flying Lotus, Courtney Barnett, Mavis Staples, Fontaines D.C. will IDLES.
Indie Week, an international conference for the independent music industry, takes place for four days every summer in New York City, culminating in the Libera Awards, which honor accomplishments in the independent music sector.
With New York at the center of the current coronavirus pandemic, however, the indie trade association flipped its two flagship annual events — Indie Week and the Libera Awards – into online experiences on the same dates as originally planned, June 15-18, 2020.
“True to indie music’s form, our organization swiftly pivoted and evolved to serve the needs of our artists, labels, and the fans who support them,” says A2IM President and CEO Richard James Burgess in a statement. “As we all look for good news and a sense of normalcy during these turbulent times,” he continues, “this is a way we can serve the independent music community.”
Hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces and Latina punk act Alice Bag are among the confirmed performers for the June 18 ceremony, while funnyman Chris Gethard returns as host.
Sponsors this year include ADA, Ingrooves, Merlin, Qobuz, Songtrust, SoundExchange and The Orchard.
