The New York DJ/producer duo returned to the same Madison Square Garden stage where they had joined Halsey earlier this month (Aug. 13) on the sold-out final stop of the singer/songwriter’s Badlands tour.
What a difference two weeks makes. In the interim, “Closer” became both acts’ first Hot 100 No. 1 hit, as well as the first song to hit No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts since Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” in 2013.
During the first VMAs performance for either act, The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart took to the mic to alternate lead vocals alongside Halsey. The two artists took the song’s title to heart, acting flirtatious and leaning in close to sing to each other before enjoying the audience’s positive reception.
