If there’s one thing the music industry has learned about Lady Gaga, it’s to expect the unexpected. As one of music’s most adventurous dressers, the 30-year-old has worn everything from a meat dress to facial prosthetics, and is probably the only musician that will ever arrive to the Grammys in an egg. It’s her artful absurdity that makes Gaga’s Super Bowl LI halftime show performance so exciting. Fashion, music and football fans alike are wondering what trick Gaga has planned for the Feb. 5 mega-event.
In honor of 2017’s most anticipated style moment in music so far, Billboard spoke to four celebrity stylists about what they’d love to see Gaga rock at the Super Bowl. Check out the predicted Gaga looks below.
I’ve been thinking a lot about what Gaga will be wearing for the Super Bowl LI halftime show, and I can definitely tell you what I don’t want to see her in! For this Joanne promo cycle, she has been favoring a silhouette that I feel we’ve seen one (or five…) too many times at this point: high-waisted jean shorts, super short and cut super high at the side hip, with a cropped tee revealing underboob, topped with a wide-brimmed hat and crazy high heels.
I’d love to see her go back to her Gaga roots and be super playful and bold, maybe do a riff on Americana and the football jersey, super colorful and sparkly, zany yet high-fashion. Perhaps a fitted mesh football jersey top — complete with numbers and GAGA written across the back — paired with a white brief that laces up at center front like football tights and a narrow, suede thigh-high boot. The jersey should have large sequin patches, a la Gucci, with playful imagery like hot dogs, D “fence,” footballs, nachos and the icons of the teams in the game. It would be in line with her current look, yet draw on the playful Gaga of yesteryear, all the while celebrating the event she is supporting!
Lady Gaga never ceases to amaze me. I would love to see her in a massive gown with trails of fabric that slowly detach into a “superwoman” body suit as she is suspended in the air. Cirque Du Soleil meets the Super Bowl!
I love Gaga’s more recent direction — it feels evolved and mature but still super fresh. Her makeup has been simple and natural and the silhouettes super and modern. So I’m hoping less fashion ghost or spoiled meats (or hopefully none at all) and more ’70s country/disco glam.
What I definitely expect: color and metallics. I can’t wait to see what she exaggerates — be it the size of a hat, the platform of her shoes, or the shape of her outfit. Something almost cartoon-y to stand out on that giant stage.
I’m sure that not feeling the need to be the most outrageously costumed person 24/7 has simplified Lady Gaga’s life tremendously. Her lounge singer nostalgia has been a breath of fresh air for all of us and given room for others to let their freak flags fly.
That said, I think we all really miss the Gaga that was the human embodiment of a coke bender, the Gaga the world fell in love with. I’m hoping for something theatrical that one can only really pull off onstage — like a pregnancy suit with a big screen projection of an ultrasound of twins inside doing their own halftime show.
I’m a huge fan of Philip Treacy and hope that he has cooked up some sort of “red hat” parody headpiece, since he usually has a knack for pairing humor with elegance. Not to be anti-Patriots but I’m mostly watching for the commercials, since I did the costume design on several of them.
