“Concert for George,” the November 2002 celebration of George Harrison’s life and music, will be documented in CD and DVD releases by that name Nov. 18 via Warner Strategic Marketing. Both will be double-disc sets.
The video of the evening — which, as previously reported, opened earlier this month in limited U.S. theatrical release — was filmed in high definition and recorded in 5.1 surround sound. The double-disc DVD set will feature one disc with the theatrical edit, including concert highlights, interviews with the performers and backstage footage. The second DVD disc will contain the unabridged concert. The two-CD set will feature the audio soundtrack to the full show.
Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton served as the music director for the event, which featured appearances by Harrison’s surviving Beatles bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as friends Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Joe Brown, Anoushka Shankar and Billy Preston. Among the Harrison songs they performed were “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “I Want to Tell You,” “Inner Light,” “Give Me Love,” “Taxman,” “I Need You” and “For You Blue.”
The concert was held a year after the death of Harrison, who passed away Nov. 29, 2001, after a long battle with cancer. The movie trailer for the film and assorted photos from the event can be seen at the “Concert for George” Web site.
