Music has a prominent place among the nominees for the 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards, with the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” and the screen version of Broadway musical “The Producers” among them. Also picking up multiple nods was the CBS mini-series “Elvis,” while the best original song category brought nominations for Dolly Parton and Alanis Morissette, among others.
In the musical or comedy field, “Walk the Line” netted a nomination for best motion picture, as well as actor and actress notices for leads Joaquin Phoenix (Cash) and Reese Witherspoon (June Carter Cash).
“The Producers” is also up for best motion picture-musical or comedy, while Nathan Lane’s portrayal of Max Bialystock earned him a nod for best actor and Will Ferrell’s turn as a Nazi playwright scored a best supporting actor nomination.
“Will Ferrell, I think secretly is a crazy Nazi,” Mel Brooks, the comic mastermind behind all three versions of “The Producers” to date, Morissette’s “Wunderkind” from “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”
“Brokeback” and “Narnia” are both up in the best original score category for works by Santaolalla and Harry Gregson, respectively. They will vie for the honor with scores by Alexandre Desplat (“Syriana”), James Newton Howard (“King Kong”) and John Williams (“Memoirs of a Geisha”).
In the mini series of motion picture made for television category, “Elvis” brought in three nominations: best actor (Johnathan Rhys Myers as Elvis Presley, Camryn Manheim as Gladys Presley and Randy Quaid as “Colonel” Tom Parker). Musically infused HBO film “Lackawanna Blues” pulled in nominations for best mini series or motion picture made for television and best performance by an actress for S. Epatha Merkerson.
Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press, the Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place Jan. 16 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will be broadcast live on NBC.
