Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen joined Rachael Ray yesterday to help her cook “Bird in a Grilled Cheese Nest” — a grilled cheese with an egg in the middle. Watch the video here.

Brownstein and Armisen stopped by to promote their recently published book, The Portlandia Cookbook: Cook Like A Local. Armisen did most of the cooking with Ray, though he struggled to adjust to her quick pace in the kitchen, joking several times that he had to pause the proceedings to tell “a really slow story.” Brownstein joined the fun when it was time to place the eggs into the middle of the sandwich. Grilled-cheese makers everywhere will be pleased to learn that the key to a “perfectly golden” sandwich is spreading mayonnaise on the outside of the bread before grilling.

Eggs aside, Brownstein is also gearing up for Sleater-Kinney‘s first new album since 2005, No Cities to Love. When not making decadent sandwiches, Armisen leads the house band on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
