Carly Simon’s upcoming performances on board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will be recorded for a PBS special and DVD release. The singer songwriter is scheduled to entertain passengers sailing Sept. 2-8 from New York to England on the transatlantic ocean liner.
Filmmaker Jim Gable — who has worked with Sting, the Rolling Stones and Cyndi Lauper, among others — will capture Simon’s two planned performances in the ship’s Queens Room and other footage during the cruise. An as-yet-unnamed DVD culled from the weeklong voyage will be releases Nov. 22 via Columbia. An hour-long version will air during December pledge drives conducted by PBS affiliates.
Simon is expected to perform songs from her storied career along with material from “Moonlight Serenade” (Columbia), a collection of standards from Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin, Glenn Miller, Rodgers & Hart and others. Released in July, the disc debuted at No. 7 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 130,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In addition to the cruise special, Simon’s official Web site also hints that the artist is planning a slate of fall performances in support of the album, although no details have been confirmed.
