The songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber weren’t the only theatrics on “American Idol” this week, as tattooed finalist Carly Smithson was booted from the show last night (April 23).
Despite a soulful performance of Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the 24-year-old San Diego native was corralled with the other bottom third, Syesha Mercado, before host Ryan Seacrest delivered the bad news.
The Davids (Archuleta and Cook) at first were both deemed safe before Mercado was introduced to the hot seat. Prior to the announcement, Smithson re-delivered “Superstar” and Mercado sang again her rendition of “One Rock’N’Roll Too Many.”
Brooke White and Archuleta, who both flubbed lyrics of their chosen songs last week, sailed through to the remaining top five.
Highlights aside from the announcement of Smithson’s departure included a cameo appearance from President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, thanking viewers for their donations during the “Idol Gives Back” live episode. The show raised $22 million dollars for various charities. Leona Lewis also performed her multi-week Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, “Bleeding Love.”
Besides Mercado, Archuleta, White and Cook, dreadlocked dreamboat Jason Castro also remains alive in the “Idol” competition. Next week, finalists will tackle the songs of Neil Diamond.
