Is Stephen Colbert the next James Taylor?
The Late Night host had Carly Simon on his show Tuesday night, where he asked Simon what her favorite song was to sing with James Taylor. Simon hesitated — perhaps because ex-husband Taylor is not a favorite topic of conversation for the singer – but Colbert quickly suggested “Mockingbird,” an Inez and Charlie Foxx song that the duo famously covered in 1973.
“Can we try it?” Colbert pleaded.
“Oh, no no no,” Simon resisted before Colbert’s band told her they were ready to back them up. What ensued was a shockingly good off-the-cuff duet between Simon and Colbert, who harmonized the Taylor parts.
Simon was on the show to promote her new memoir Boys In The Trees and a new double-disc collection, Songs From The Trees (A Musical Memoir). Later in the show she performed a new track from the album called “I Can’t Thank You Enough” with her son Ben Taylor, who wrote the song. No word on how Taylor felt about his father’s “Mockingbird” stand-in.
