Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe” is the Summer song that nearly never was. The bubbly Canadian went into the recording studio thinking she was “supposed to write a folk album.”

“But I didn’t want to,” Jepsen told us on the set of her recent Walmart Soundcheck taping. “I wanted to write a pop album. And everyday I’d go into the studio with every intention of writing a folk album, and I’d have all these pop ideas. At one point I threw my hands in the air and said, ‘Well this is what I want to do. Let’s break all the rules and just do it.”
Going pop paid off for Jepsen, whose “Maybe” spent nine weeks atop the Hot 100 and has so far sold 5.9 million downloads since its release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Thanks to her collaboration with Owl City, “Good Time,” Jepsen spent 27 straight weeks in the Hot 100 top 10. (That streak ends this week as “Good” slips to No. 11.)
Her album, “Kiss,” debuted two weeks ago at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and includes current single “This Kiss.”
“I would say the main thread throughout the whole album is, it’s about love,” she told us. “It’s about all the complications that go along with that. For me, love is an endless pool of inspiration that you can pull from nonstop. I can write you six albums about love and I wouldn’t be done.”
