The pop duo Cardiknox — Lonnie Angle and Thomas Dutton — have been taken on a whirlwind of an adventure. Besides opening for Carly Rae Jepsen’s Gimmie Love tour, their debut album Portrait (produced by John Shanks, who’s worked Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morissette) is due out March 11. Billboard is exclusively premiering the group’s song “Wild Child” from the album.
“Wild Child” finds Cardiknox beaming with energy and effervescence. “Never growing up, I’ll be young until the day I die” Angle sings on the chorus.
“Thomas and I were working out of a friend’s studio in Seattle, and we wanted to write a song that spoke to rebellion — which if you know me at all, I’m not rebellious, at least not in the traditional sense,” Angle tells Billboard. “But we thought there’s something inherently wild and free about marching to the beat of your own drum, and doing things your way — even if it’s not necessarily the cool way. Isn’t being true to yourself, in today’s crazy ass-copycat-Instagram-famous world, kinda wild!?”
In addition, the duo are excited for the collaborative artistic work put that went into Portrait‘s cover art. “We worked with one of our favorite artists, Tristan Eaton, who is a true visionary in the street art meets fine art world. Tristan is known for his iconic portraits of women, done in an incredibly unique style. He has murals all over the world and we are huge fans of his work,” says Angle. “We worked with Tristan on pulling out the important themes and lyrical messages within the album, and incorporating that symbolism into a portrait of my face for the album cover. It was an honor to work with him, and we are so so happy with the final product. The man is a genius.”
