Cardi B initially rose to fame due to her Instagram video realness and addictive personality on Love & Hip-Hop. But in the past year, the rapper/social media mogul has honed another crucial celebrity skill: her style is on-point.
According to an interview with HotNewHipHop, her relationship with the fashion industry hasn’t been easy. “A lot of designers, they did tell me no,” Cardi told HNHH backstage at Fader Fort’s Dream Hotel artist lounge. “They didn’t really wanna work with me. I said to myself, you know what, I’m gonna buy their pieces until they wanna work with me… I’m gonna prove to them that I’m a fashion f—ing icon.”
Luckily, Cardi’s not the kind to take no for an answer. A glance at her Instagram shows her game plane in motion, with pieces from fashion houses like Gucci and Christian Louboutin to edgy emerging brands like Namila and These Pink Lips.
The newly minted fashionista also touched upon her friendship with Queens-born designer Laquan Smith. “That was an organic relationship. He reached out to me, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I cannot believe somebody like Laquan Smith wants to put his clothes on me,’” Cardi exclaimed. “He comes from a small place and he has big dreams, and what I like about him the most is that his clothes curve with your body.”
