The nominees for the 2008 Indie Awards taking place during Canadian Music Week have been announced and include rising stars like Tokyo Police Club, critical darlings Besnard Lakes and a hall of fame induction for veteran rockers Lowest of the Low.
The ceremony will take place in Toronto on Mar. 8, with nominees selected by individuals from throughout Canada’s independent music scene. Winners are decided by a combination of public and industry voting. The award ceremony is one of the closing events for Canadian Music Week, which runs in Toronto Mar. 5 – 8.
The Galaxie Rising Stars Award will also be announced at the event. Acts up for the award will be picked by music critics from across Canada who submit a list of their top five Canadian independent releases from 2007.
Sales and airplay are not a factor, the organization says, and the winner will be decided based upon artistic merit, with the winner receiving a $3,000 prize awarded at the show.
Acts nominated for awards include Arcade Fire, Feist and The Weakerthans for album of the year. Rockers State of Shock’s “Money Honey” and pop band Major Maker’s “Rollercoaster” are up for single of the year, while Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and LCD Soundsystem are all nominated for international album of the year.
