
The Music Managers Forum (MMF) Canada and The Canadian Independent Music Assn. (CIMA) and have each announced the recipients for their 2019 awards shows, May 7 and June 10, respectively. Both ceremonies take place in Toronto.
First up, for MMF Canada’s Honour Roll Awards — held at Bymark Restaurant just as Canadian Music Week kicks off — will recognize Sandy Pandya of Pandyamonium Management with the namesake Honour Roll Award; 50-plus year industry vet Ron Sakamoto of Gold & Gold Productions/Sakamoto Agency with the Brian Chater Pioneer Award; and the Banner Year Award to three people, Arkells and Entertainment One’s Chris Taylor, Ashley Poitevin and Sarah Osgoode. All five are being awarded at this annual private sold-out affair “for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Canada’s music management industry.”
Previous recipients of the Honour Roll Award include Susan de Cartier (2018), Chris Smith (2017), Lorne Saifer (2016), Rob Lanni & Eric Lawrence (2015), Gilles Paquin (2014), Jake Gold (2013), Larry Wanagas (2012), Terry McBride (2011), Sam Feldman (2010), Ray Danniels (2009), Bruce Allen (2008), and Bernie Finkelstein (2007).
The Brian Chater Pioneer Award has previously be won by Riley O’Connor (2018), Duff Roman (2017) Michael Cohl (2016), Pegi Cecconi (2015), Brian Chater (2014), Neill Dixon & Steve Propas (2013), Donald Tarlton & Terry Flood (2012), Mary Martin (2011) and Leonard Rambeau (2010).
Previous recipients of the Banner Year Award include Daniel Caesar, Matthew Burnett, Jordan Evans (2017), Joanne Setterington & The Strumbellas (2017), Tony Sal & The Weeknd (2016).
Then, on June 10, at Lithuanian House Banquet Hall, the CIMA Celebration & Awards Gala pays tribute to a range of people from the Canadian independent music sector, this year the Builder Award goes to Kim Cooke, Pheromone Recordings & Revolution Recording Studio; the Brian Chater Industry Award to Allison Outhit, Six Shooter Records (formerly FACTOR); the Entrepreneur Award to Shauna de Cartier, Six Shooter Records; and the Unsung Hero Award to Yvonne Matsell, concert booker & co-founder of NXNE.
“We are honored to once again celebrate those who create, support and strengthen Canadian independent music,” said CIMA president Stuart Johnston in a statement. “We are pleased to recognize this year’s honourees for their outstanding contributions to the Canadian music industry.”
The winner of the marketing award, submitted by the companies and determined by a jury, will be declared the night of the event. The three nominees are: Last Gang Records for Harrison’s Apricity; Arts & Crafts for Dan Mangan’s More or Less; and Endemic Marketing for Good Lovelies’ Shapeshifters.
