Academy Award winner Burt Bacharach has signed on to score Po, a feature film about a widowed father raising his 10-year old son with autism.
The cause is close to Bacharach’s heart: His daughter Nikki has Asperger’s Syndrome. Bacharach met the film’s director, John Asher, by chance on a flight last year and agreed to let Asher use his classic, “Close to You,” made famous by the Carpenters. Upon seeing the film, he agreed to compose the music. “I was so touched by the film that scoring it was a labor of love,” he said in a statement.
The film stars Christopher Gorham as the father and Julian Feder as his son.
The legendary Bacharach has won eight Grammy Awards and three Oscars, including best original song for Arthur and best original song and original score for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Among the other films he contributed music to are What’s New Pussycat and Casino Royale.
“I’ve been working on Po for eight years, beginning shortly after my son was diagnosed with autism,” Asher said in a statement. “While it has been a long time, every step of the way has been blessed by destiny, such as getting a seat next to Burt after missing a flight.”
The film is produced by Asher and Rod Hamilton via Commonwealth Film Manufacturing and LOFC Production, LLC. A release date has yet to be announced.
