The latest installment of Billboard’s weekly “Music Video Evolution” video series is dedicated to K-pop superstars BTS, dating back to their very first music video “No More Dream” and running all the way through their most recent release, “IDOL.”
Beginning with 2013’s “No More Dream” and “We Are Bulletproof Pt2,” which appeared on the band’s debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, the video introduced the world to the group’s extraordinary rapping and dance skills.
That same year, the guys also dropped “N.O,” which served as the lead single on their EP O!RUL8,2? and aimed to tackle the state of the education system and how it turned students into “studying machines.”
In 2014, BTS shared videos for “Boy In Luv,” “Just One Day,” and “Danger,” the latter of which, as Billboard previously described, follows the band members as they “express anger and passion towards a lover who won’t give them the time of day.”
The following year, RM shared visuals for a handful of his solo tracks including “Awakening” and the slightly trippy “Do You,” which reminded listeners to “Do the fuck you want.” The band also released videos for “I Need U” and “For You,” as well as the videos for “Dope,” which recently surpassed 350 million views on YouTube, becoming their third video to do so and making them the only Korean group to see a trio of videos do that.
2016’s “Epilogue: Young Forever” saw the band walk through a giant maze made of chain-link fences, while the energetic “Fire” and Suga’s solo tracks “Agust D” and “Give It To Me” followed.
“Spring Day” and “Not Today” were among BTS’ 2017 releases, as were “DNA” – which BTS have described as some of the most difficult choreography they’ve had to master to date, and features moves inspired by the structure of DNA itself – and the Steve Aoki-remixed “MIC Drop.”
BTS member J-Hope dropped his solo tracks “Daydream” and “Airplane” in 2018, while the entire group shared “Fake Love” and, most recently, the video for “IDOL,” which broke the record for the biggest music video debut in YouTube history, earning more than 45 million views in its first 24 hours online. The video was also re-released to include Nicki Minaj’s feature.
