Earlier this week, BTS’ “Idol” featuring Nicki Minaj shot to No. 11 on the Hot 100 (chart dated Sept. 8). Now, just a few hours after holding their first stateside show of 2018, the group has released a new version of the song’s music video featuring the Queen rapper.
In the new video for “Idol,” Minaj appears decked out in luxury amid brightly hued fabrics and sets that are similar to those seen in the original video. Waving a feathered fan previously held by Jimin and taking selfies, she serves up her verse from “Idol” as the lyrics appear behind her with the English-verses written in hangul, the Korean writing system. The alternate “Idol” music video also ends differently than the original, with clips of people performing the ‘Idol” dance challenge.
The song’s original music video, which featured the seven Korean stars and their solo version of the track, was released on Aug. 24. It went on to have the biggest 24-hour YouTube debut of all time — beating last year’s record set by Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” — and was the fastest video to hit the 100 million views milestone in 2018. At time of publication, the original version of “Idol” has more than 136 million views.
“Idol” is the lead single off of BTS’ chart-topping Love Yourself: Answer album, also released on Aug. 24. A digital version of the song featuring Minaj was made available the same day, though it doesn’t appear on physical copies. Answer is BTS’ second album of 2018 to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The septet is the first-ever Korean act to top the chart, and the first act in over a decade to see a single, let alone two, album hit the top slot.
BTS’ Love Yourself world tour kicked off its North American leg last night in Los Angeles at The Staples Center. The group will perform over a dozen shows in the U.S. and Canada before closing things out with the first-ever stadium show by a Korean solo act at New York City’s Citi Field on Oct. 6.
