From one 2010 pop phenom to another, Bruno Mars added his gentle touch to Katy Perry‘s summer hit “California Gurls” during a performance for BBC Radio 1. The singer-songwriter puts an acoustic twist on the upbeat track and even croons a little Beach Boys at the end of the clip.
Backed by his Smeezington cohorts, Mars riffs on some of Perry’s lyrics and drops a shout-out to “all my girls from L.A., all my shorties from the Bay” at the climax of the song. After earnestly taking on the pop track, Mars seamlessly segues into the Beach Boys’ classic “California Girls” at 3:33 before declaring, “Cali girls, they love them some Bruno!”
Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum Added as Grammys Performers
Mars and Perry will both perform at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 13, and before Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” blasted to the top of the Hot 100 this week, Mars’ second solo single “Grenade” was swapping places with Perry’s latest hit “Firework” in the top two spots of the chart. Another Bruno-Katy connection? Mars sang the hook on “Billionaire,” the 2010 hit single from Perry’s ex-boyfriend, Travie McCoy.
