While much of the music industry was still schmoozing at MusiCares Person of the Year Gala paying tribute to Barbra Streisand, the industry’s up-and-comers were lined up to get into the Smeezingtons Celebration (starting at 10 p.m.), saluting singer/songwriter/producer Bruno Mars for his multiple Grammy nominations.
Folks were lined up outside Bardot Hollywood on Vine, the storied street of dreams in Hollywood’s early days. Once inside the venue, low-glowing lights kept the mood dark and mysterious as a DJ spun old-school jams like Bell Biv DeVoe‘s “Poison.”
About 11:30 p.m. the man himself was ushered into the building. In a sunken room off the main dance floor, Mars and his band took over for the DJ, performing a mix of old-school (Bobby Brown‘s “Every Little Step,” Montel Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It”) and, of course, a smooth groove mix of his Grammy-nominated “Just the Way You Are.”
Joining Mars onstage to sing were Monica and Keri Hilson. Comprised more of young, up-and-comer types versus industry execs, partiers included singer Jay Sean and “90210” actor Tristan Wilds.
