Garth Brooks will receive an award of merit at the 29th annual American Music Awards, airing Jan. 9 on ABC. Brooks will be recognized for his “outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public,” particularly his 21 No. 1 country singles and his four albums that have each been certified by the the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for U.S. sales of 10 million units.
Previous winners of the award of merit include Janet Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry, and Ella Fitzgerald.
As previously reported, Alicia Keys leads this year’s nominations with five, joining other multiple nominees Brooks & Dunn, Destiny’s Child, Dave Matthews Band, Lonestar, R. Kelly, Tim McGraw, ‘N Sync, and Shaggy. Lenny Kravitz, Brooks & Dunn, Cher, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Shaggy, and Yolanda Adams are confirmed to perform.
Brooks recently wrapped a series of live concert specials for CBS. His latest Capitol album, “Scarecrow,” is in its third week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and is No. 4 on The Billboard 200.
