David Fine, one of the figureheads of the global record industry in the 1980s and 1990s, died yesterday (Aug. 30) at his home in Shanley Green, Surrey after becoming ill with cancer. He was 76.
Born on June 28, 1929 in South Africa, Fine forged a career in the music industry which spanned four decades. During that time, he served as president/CEO of the PolyGram group, chairman/CEO of Polygram U.K., and chairman of the Decca Record Company. He also held senior posts at trade bodies the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and the British Phonographic Industry.
Fine was a member of the board of IFPI from 1987-1998, serving as chairman from 1991-1998. During his last year with the trade body, he was awarded an IFPI medal for distinguished service.
John Kennedy, the current chairman and CEO of the IFPI, recalls Fine’s extensive knowledge of the music business together with his strong business acumen and leadership qualities.
“David Fine’s contribution to the success of the recording industry during the 80’s and 90’s is greatly under-estimated,” Kennedy comments. “He brought a great business vision and an understanding of the dynamics needed for the industry to prosper.”
Fine is survived by his wife Bernice, son Mark, and daughters Amanda and Pamela.
