— The reunion of three original Jazz Crusaders members—Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder—is among the highlights planned for the 23rd annual Long Beach (Calif.) Jazz Festival (Aug. 13-15). Also on tap: Melanie Fiona, Boney James, George Duke, Dave Koz and Jonathan Butler with Sheila E., Marcus Miller and Christian Scott, plus an all-star tribute to Grover Washington Jr. featuring Ronnie Laws and others.
— Rhino Records will issue “The Best of Gerald Levert” Aug. 31. The collection spans two decades, encompassing the late singer/songwriter’s solo career and his stints as a member of Levert and LSG (with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill). The set also features the unreleased track “Can It Stay.”
— New Edition’s Johnny Gill is set to release his first new CD in 16 years through St. Louis-based independent label Notifi Records in 2011. The label, headed by chairwoman Ira Dewitt, will release Ginuwine’s next project, “Elgin,” this December. Executive producing Ginuwine’s album is Bryan-Michael Cox.
