LOS ANGELES — Brandy has “requested and been granted an unconditional release” from her recording contract with Atlantic Records, according to a press statement released by her camp. The label confirms the split.
The singer/songwriter spent 11 years at Atlantic, releasing four albums and notching seven top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including two No. 1s: “The Boy Is Mine” and “Have You Ever?” Her best-selling album, 1998’s “Never Say Never,” has sold 4.5 million units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Earlier this year, Brandy released her fourth album, “Afrodisiac,” which has sold 361,000.
In a statement, Atlantic says, “Brandy is among the most accomplished and charismatic artists of our time, and it has been a joy and a privilege to have her as a member of the Atlantic family for the past decade … We thank her for all the wonderful music she has given us over the years, and we wish her all the best as she moves into the next phase of her extraordinary career.”
The singer is said to be in talks with other record labels. In the meantime, she is set to co-executive-produce a fall 2005 comedy series by Touchstone Television for the Fox Television Network, working with her manager Sonja Norwood and producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Brandy had a UPN show, “Moesha,” in the ’90s.
