Brandi Carlile is getting into the giving spirit of the holidays, by heading to the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor for her annual acoustic set for the incarcerated women.
A new mini-doc highlights the event in 2017, where she sang “The Mother,” her personal account of the “complicated” nature of motherhood, written after the birth of her first child, Evangeline. Carlile is then presented a Christmas wreath.
“The issues of faith and doubt, forgiveness, addiction, reconciliation—all those things, those are themes that are really important and nobody knows it better than those ladies,” she said of the experience.
The performance is made possible in partnership with the IF Project, a program that allows incarcerated women tell their stories and focuses on intervention, prevention and reduction in incarceration and recidivism. Carlile’s Looking Out Foundation has, donated $100,000 to the project since its inception.
