15-year-old Sophie Pecora tugged on America’s heartstrings when she opened up about bullying during her America’s Got Talent audition in May. All four judges gave her a “yes,” and she came back with a whole set of new songs for the second round.
On Tuesday (July 16), the singer took the stage with her guitar to perform her new original, “Misfits,” which discusses how words affect people and how social media portrays a fake image. Despite all obstacles, she flipped the narrative to suggest those who are bullied could be superheroes in disguise because, as she sings, “Misfits have some powers that are really pretty rad.”
“I love that,” guest judge Brad Paisley said of that powerful closing line. “I think that I know you from that one song. That’s incredible to stand up there with just a guitar. That takes incredible cajones. I don’t think there’s a more important issue now that social media is this thing that’s pervasive.”
“You have schooled so many people in this moment,” he continued, before slamming on the golden buzzer, sending Pecora straight into the live rounds. Watch below, and catch America’s Got Talent on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
