The British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) has announced that its Certified Awards Programme will include single streams when awarding sales certifications to singles, starting next month, as Music Week reports.
The news coincides with the Official Charts Company’s (OCC) recent announcement that it will incorporate streaming data into its Official Singles Chart Top 40 starting July 6. Both the BPI and the OCC will use the same criteria to assess a record’s sales, with 100 streams being equal to one sale (a song has to be listened to for at least 30 seconds to qualify as a stream).
“In the same way that the Official Charts are respected around the world as the authoritative measure of U.K. musical popularity, so too our Certified Awards are widely recognised as an iconic barometer of an artist’s success,” said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor. “As with the charts, it’s vital they continue to reflect the new ways that fans consume their favourite music. With streaming becoming ever more popular, it’s the right time to ensure this exciting new format is included in the way our awards are compiled.”
In the first few weeks of June 2014, the number of weekly audio streams in the U.K. had grown to an average of 260 million a week, according to the OCC; in 2013, close to 7.4 billion tracks were streamed in the U.K., twice the total recorded in 2012. According to the BPI, streaming now represents more than 10 percent of U.K. trade income from recorded music.
The BPI’s Certified Awards Programme assigns recordings Silver at 200,000 units moved, Gold at 400,000, and Platinum at 600,000.
