A David Bowie concert last night at the Knight Center in Miami was canceled after a local IATSE stagehand fell to his death during the show’s intermission.
Police are investigating the nature of the accident, but sources tell Billboard.biz the stagehand was a spotlight operator who fell to the stage while setting up for Bowie after opening act Stereophonics had completed its set.
Although attempts were made to resuscitate the man at the scene, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Sources say the man was not wearing a safety harness.
A statement was read to the audience after the accident, informing the sold-out crowd that refund or postponement information would be available shortly. The crowd left without incident.
Bowie is on the second North American leg of his A Reality tour, which ends June 5 in New Jersey. Then he goes back to Europe, wrapping July 23 in France.
Produced worldwide by Clear Channel Entertainment, the tour has grossed $32.5 million from 65 shows reported to Billboard Boxscores.
