It may be the baby name heard ’round the hip-hop world, but Jay-Z and Beyonce won’t be able to trademark “Blue Ivy” — at least not for their next bash.
Instead, according to the Boston Herald, a wedding and event planning business of the same name has won trademark protection.
“I definitely needed to protect what it is I’ve been living on,” owner Veronica Alexandra told the paper. “Now it’s time to create the partnerships and business avenues I’m planning on doing, period.”
Alexandra told the Herald that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office sent a suspended letter to the hip-hop power couple, meaning they’ll be unable to trademark the name for similar business purposes such as wedding planning. According to E! Online, Jay-Z and Beyonce may be able to register the trademark within other fields.
“That being said, I think the main reason Beyoncé and Jay-Z applied for trademark protection in Blue Ivy was to discourage others from using the name in connection with new products or businesses, and that seems to have worked, at least so far,” attorney Aaron Ross told the site.
