The video for “Lonesome Day,” the second single from Bruce Springsteen’s latest Columbia album, “The Rising,” will feature a new, live vocal track. Directed by Mark Pellington, the clip was shot in Springsteen’s adopted hometown of Asbury Park, N.J.
“The most striking thing about making this video was the fact that Bruce sang every take live, nailing the vocal take after take, each time,” said Pellington, who also directed videos for Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” and “One” by U2. “The final take came 16 hours after the first one, and he never missed a note.” The vocals were edited and mastered for the final cut of the video by Brendan O’Brien, who also produced “The Rising.”
“Lonesome Day” is the first video from “The Rising,” and it will begin airing on MTV, MTV2, and VH1 next week. Released at the end of July, “The Rising” debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.44 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Springsteen and the E Street Band are in the midst of a European tour that stops in Bologna, Italy, tonight (Oct. 18). The trek will close Oct. 27 in London, after which the musicians will regroup Nov. 3 in Dallas to kick off the second leg of their North American tour. A Dec. 11 appearance on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” will come just two nights before the tour’s close in Albany, N.Y. A new round of North American and international dates is expected in 2003.
