UPDATE: Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston’s mother and Bobbi Kristina Brown’s grandmother, has spoken in contradiction to Bobby Brown’s optimistic comments, calling Bobbi Kristina’s brain damage “irreversible.”
“Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me,” she told TMZ. “I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive.”
After being found unresponsive in her Georgia home on Jan. 31, Bobbi Kristina Brown has held on to life via a medically-induced coma while Bobby Brown, his family and the family of the late Whitney Houston pray for her recovery.
On Saturday, a glimmer of hope seemed to arrive when Bobby Brown told a Texas audience that his daughter was “awake.” Not long after that onstage comment, several publications, citing anonymous sources close to the family, contradicted Brown’s claim, saying the 22-year-old’s condition remains unchanged.
Today, Monday (April 20), Brown and his lawyer have released a statement to clarify what Brown meant on Saturday.
“Bobbi Kristina’s condition has changed since moving from Emory University Hospital and there has been improvement. Doctors have indicated that she will have a long life,” said Christopher Brown, legal counsel for Bobby Brown. “However, Bobbi Kristina is presently embarking on a rehabilitation process and the quality of her life will not be known for years to come.”
The statement also features comment from Brown’s wife — and the mother of his unborn child — Alicia Etheredge-Brown. “She has made it out of ICU, opened her eyes, and started a rehabilitation that will be long and hard,” Etheredge-Brown said. “We will hold on to all the blessings GOD gives us to help her at this time and we look forward to her having a relationship with her unborn sister as our family grows in love and faith.”
Despite this optimistic press release, a source close to the situation tells Billboard her condition remains unchanged.
Whether the truth lies on one side or somewhere in the middle remains to be seen.
