Christopher Young, the composer of “Ghost Rider,” “Hellraiser” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” will receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at the organization’s Film & Television Awards on May 21.
While Young made his mark with compositions on thrillers and horror films – he’s a four-time Saturn Award nominee from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, winning in 1990 for “Hellbound: Hellraiser II” – he’s also worked on dramas, including the Golden Globe-nominated “The Shipping News,” “Wonder Boys” and “Rounders.”
Young has won the BMI Film Music Award three times, for “The Grudge,” “Swordfish” and “Entrapment.” In addition, he’s earned two Emmy nominations for TV movies “Last Flight Out” and “Norma Jean & Marilyn.”
Previous recipients of the Richard Kirk Award include George S. Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams, Thomas Newman, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman and Alan Menken.
Besides Young, the BMI fete also will honor Peter Golub, director of the Sundance Institute Film Composers Lab, with the Classic Contribution Award; in addition, composers from the past year’s top-grossing films and highest-rated programs on network TV and cable will be recognized.
The event will be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, and will be hosted by BMI president & CEO Del Bryant and BMI’s VP, film/TV relations, Doreen Ringer Ross.
